The ‘Professional Media Guidelines’ pledge was launched in 2017 By Arab Council for Childhood & Development and signed by Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qasimi, Chairperson of Sharjah Media Council (SMC), that aimed to promote media guidelines for children’s issues.

The Child Friendly Media Project is a reflection of Sharjah’s commitment to childhood and in conformity with international standards of child rights, and comes within the framework of the executive plan of the Sharjah Child Friendly City project that aims to join UNICEF’s Child Friendly Cities initiative. The project has been introduced and raised awareness of media professionals to ethical and professional guidelines that should be followed when covering childhood and child rights issues.

In 2018, a professional guideline on child rights issue for Arab child friendly media was developed by Arab Council for Childhood and Development. With the approval from the Sharjah Media Council and Sharjah Executive Council, SCFO circulated the guideline to all the entities at Sharjah working with children and media.

Consultation sessions were held for more than 200 participants including professionals, experts, and children, in collaboration with Arab Council for Childhood and Development.

The Main Objectives

1. To create a general framework for a joint Arab media strategy based on ethical and professional principles.

2. The effect of Children’s Right in the media and professional principles in addressing the child right issues.

3. Apply the professional principles to address Arab media and best practices in the media.

The League of Arab States and the Arab Council for Childhood and Development honored the “Sharjah Child Friendly Office” during the launching ceremony of the “Childhood-Friendly Media” guide under the title “Correcting Misconceptions about Children in the Arab Media,” which was held in the Egyptian capital, Cairo
2021
Sharjah participated in General Comment No. 25 on the rights of the child in the digital environment, with the aim of establishing an international standard for the protection of children’s rights in the digital world.
